Love Should Be Your Only Debt
Week of ~July 27, 2009
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Romans 13:8(KJV)
As a Christian, we are to pay all of our debts, to everyone we owe - including family and friends. IF it is clearly a loan (verbal or written) and not a gift (you didn't ask the person for that loan), then honor what you tell someone you will do. Remember, even if you deny your debt and think the person may forget, God does not forget and He will be the One to Judge you for ALL you do and don't do. If you have the love of God truly on the inside of you, then you will want to obey God and honor His Word (which says not to owe anyone anything, give what you owe - See: Romans 13:7), because His Spirit resides in you and you do not want to grieve It.
Now, we all may be guilty of: You ask someone you may not normally ask (because you are in a bind and feel you have no other options), with the intent to repay, but later, for whatever reason, decide you no longer owe that person. Maybe you later feel that person did you wrong, in some way. However, that is a different matter and is separate from the debt you owe them.
As a follower of Jesus, we are to lend to all people that ask. Yes, even the ones we are certain won't repay us. Why? Because God said so! He wants us to love everyone, including our enemies (the unsaved) and to lend with out expecting return. This applies if you have the means to do so, of course.
Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
People we, as Christians, must stop telling people we will pray for them, and send them on their merry way. The Lord specifically states not to do this. He says if you have to give today, do not tell the person to come back tomorrow. Prayer alone, doesn't feed the hungry. Prayer alone, does not help a family keep electricity. We were all created for a purpose. We are all someone's blessing. Prayer without works is dead. You cannot pray and ask God to bless you with a new job, while you sit back and do nothing. A job, will not knock on your door. You may very well not have the means to buy someone a meal, but you can direct them to a soup kitchen or shelter.
See, there is no excuse. we are a light. Point the lost in the right direction. Care for the needy, poor and widows. Visit the prisoners and the sick. As a Christian, we should never say "it isn't my business". Guess what? If your Father is in heaven, then it IS your business to want to do as your Father says to do. Be a doer, not just a hearer (speaker) of the Word. Amen.
